Well now you have decided your company needs a web site. Since you now have (or will shortly have) a web site, let's ask a basic question. Why did you decide you needed a web site? Let's assume you fall into one of three categories!

  1. I have a brick and mortar store who either sells products of provides services and want to use the internet as a way to advertise.

  2. I have a brick and mortar store who sells products that are easily shipped and want to expand my market beyond my local area.

  3. I don't have a store front to speak of, but do have a home business and want to sell my product over the internet to the widest possible audience.

If any of the above 3 descriptions exemplifies why you decided to build a web site, then we can help you!

Search Engines are the life blood of your web site. If you are not found by potential customers in a search engine, the only ones who will know about you is your friends and relatives whom you told about the site. You may also see visits from current customers who see you have a web site because its printed on their receipt or they saw the URL (www.yourwebsite.com)  while in your store. But the point is they are already customers. You didn't put this web site up for them because they already know who and where you are and already do business with you.

You put this web site up to attract new business, possibly beyond the state you are in and possibly to gain nationwide sales. Remember this quote:

As author Paul Gilster puts it in Digital Literacy "How could the world beat a path to your door when the path was uncharted, uncatalogued, and could be discovered only serendipitously?".

This basically describes the problem for web sites without a consistent search engine registration service. Your web site needs to be found and we can help you with this part of your web site project. Although there are only 4 "major" search engines at this time, Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and Ask Jeeves. Your standing in these search engines (the difference between a first or second page listing and a listing on page 500) is dependent on several factors.

  1. Optimization

    1. having the all the right meta tags in the header

    2. proper navigation structure so your other pages can be found

    3. good keyword selection and description

    4. good page title

    5. proper use of keywords in text and alt image tags

  2. content of your web pages and the whole web site

  3. inbound, outbound, and reciprocal links to relevant web sites

The first item in number 3 above, 'inbound links" is what you need to show web site popularity which is essential if you want to rank well. This can easily be provided by up to 2400 links from other search engines and referral sites. This is why you need to register with more than just the top 4 search engines.

*NOTE: Not all search engines except registrations of all types and all categories. Some search engines and or reference sites are specialized. For example some only deal with home gardening, others deal in real estate, and other accept anything (such as Google, Yahoo!, MSN, ASK, Temoma, HotBot, etc.). So the number of search engines your site will be registered with is dependent on it's theme or the category it falls into. If you sell automotive accessories, you would not expect to get any business from someone who went to a search engine who specialized in Home and Garden web sites, as the searcher were looking for home and garden subjects.
